New Accessible Trail at Illahee Preserve

A new, 150-ft-long accessible trail from the parking area to the picnic shelter at Illahee Preserve is ready for your feet and your wheels! With funding from Jefferson County’s Accessible Community Advisory Committee, our hardworking field crew and community volunteers installed the trail to the picnic shelter and a van-accessible parking spot earlier this month.
A few handy volunteers also helped us install an 8-foot-long wooden ramp leading up to the wood floor of the covered picnic shelter, and a new wheelchair-accessible sanican should be in place by early September. This project is part of our continued goal to increase accessibility at our nature preserves.
Trail details: The trail is 150 feet long and five feet wide, and the gradient is under five percent slope. The trail is made of compacted 1/4-inch minus gravel to provide a stable, level, hard, non-degrading, and non-slick surface for long-term durability and a comfortable visitor experience.
Directions to Illahee Preserve: From Highway 19, turn onto Prospect Avenue toward Kala Point. Take Creekview Lane (the first road on the right) and follow until the end. Please respect the neighbors here by driving slowly. Park at the split-rail fence and head on in!
