Our Digital Accessibility Efforts
In an effort to make Jefferson Land Trust more inclusive and accessible to our entire community, we’re working hard to improve digital accessibility on our website. In designing this site, we intentionally used fonts and colors that meet website accessibility standards. For more information please see our full Website Accessibility Statement.
Additionally, Jefferson Land Trust includes the Recite Me web accessibility and language toolbar on this site to allow visitors to use a wide range of accessibility and language support tools to customize their digital experience with assistive technology.
About the Recite Me Web Accessibility and Language Toolbar
Recite Me is innovative cloud-based software that lets visitors view and use our website in a way that works best for them. It helps the one in four people in the US who have a disability, including those with common conditions like sight loss and dyslexia, access our website in the way that suits them best. It also meets the needs of the one in five people in the US who speak a language other than English at home, by translating our web content into more than 100 different languages.
Opening the Recite Me Accessibility and Language Toolbar

You can open the Recite Me language and accessibility toolbar by clicking on the accessibility icon at the top of our website. This will display the Recite Me toolbar, which offers a range of options for customizing the way the website appears for you and ways you can interact with the content.

The Recite Me Toolbar
Screen Reader Buttons
Using these three buttons (back, play, and forward) you can choose to have text read aloud to you. These buttons may be helpful to people who are blind, have low vision, are neurodivergent, or who find audio more accessible than reading.
Button Details:
- Back: use the back button to rewind to the previous paragraph of text
- Play: use the play button to have the text read aloud to you
- Forward: use the forward button to skip forward to the next paragraph of text
Text Option Buttons
Using these three buttons (decrease, font, and increase) you can change the way our website looks to better access its content. These buttons may be helpful to people who have dyslexia, low vision, or an intellectual or developmental disability.
Button Details:
- Decrease: Use the decrease button to decrease the size of the text
- Font: Use the font button to change the font type, including Open-Dyslexic, as well as to adjust line height and character spacing
- Increase: Use the increase button to increase the size of the text
Color, Ruler, and Screen Mask Buttons
You can use these three buttons (color, ruler, and screen mask) to make reading online content easier.
Button Details:
- Color: Use the color button to change the background, text, and link colors
- Ruler: Use the ruler button to enable the reading ruler which allows you to read line-by-line without distractions from text below
- Screen Mask: Use the screen mask button to create a letterbox for focused viewing of a section of the page
Dictionary, Translation, and Magnifier Buttons
The dictionary, language, and magnifier buttons can assist website visitors in a variety of ways.
Button Details:
- Dictionary: Use the dictionary button to open a list of uncommon words on the page; click on a listed word for the definition
- Language: Use the language button to translate the website text into one of more than 100 languages; note that the languages with a speaker icon indicate the the text on the site can be read aloud in that language with the screen reader
- Magnifier: Use the magnifier button to open a magnifying glass that you can move around to to magnify text and images on the screen
Plain Text Mode, Margins & Audio Download Buttons
Button Details:
- Plain Text Mode: Use the plain text mode button to remove images and view the site content in plain text mode
- Margins: Use the margins button to widen or narrow the text dimensions; note that this button is only found if the plain text mode button is enabled
- Download Audio: Use the download audio button by highlight some text and then clicking on the button to download the selected text as an audio file

- Settings: Use the settings button to adjust your Recite Me toolbar settings, including reading speed and gender on the screen reader
- Reset: Use the reset button to restore the default settings on the website
- User Guide: Use the user guide button to visit Recite Me’s website and see an overview of the Recite Me toolbar features.
PDF Viewing Buttons
The buttons shown above are available for use in pdf files that are opened in a browser from our website.
How to Exit the Recite Me Accessibility and Language Toolbar
To close the Recite Me toolbar, click the X at the far right side of the toolbar.
